About Me

albie smith
The need to create and play in color started when I was a child. By responding to that call my joy and my work have become one. Almost twenty years ago I took a paper-making class and really fell in love. For years I was sloshing around in the pulp, experimenting, taking classes and teaching workshops. Making handmade paper led to making books. It is in this form that I find the union of paper and many of the surface design processes I love. There is always something going on in my studio; exploring new techniques in painting, surface design on paper, book binding and handmade paper processes keeps me happily occupied. Sharing what I do and know, through my artwork and my teaching, is a way to pass on the fruits of my curiosity and explorations. I live at the edge of the charming and historic town of Jacksonville in southern Oregon. I teach workshops in my studio, at An Artful Journey, The Artist's Nook, Art is..You, and have taught at Art Fest and Art & Soul for many years.

MY FAVORITE SOURCES FOR ART SUPPLIES

SOURCE LIST 2010
I shop local: I buy many of the supplies I use for my personal art at local stores. When buying in quantity for class supplies I often buy on line because the prices are lower and I am spending enough at a time to get free shipping. If the locals can get close in price I give them my business. Sometimes they can and sometimes not. Supporting our local independent art supply stores supports our communities, gives us choices and provides employment. Also if you need something right now they may just have it. Scrap booking and stamp stores often carry paints, waxed linen thread by the yard, book board, tools, papers and may have surprises that will give you new ideas for your art work. And they often give artist’s discounts.
Daniel Smith Good prices on Golden paints and Rising Stonehenge paper and Superfine Text Paper (Mohawk) which I use in many of my books, davey board (acid free book board), carving material for stamps, and colored acrylic gesso. Free shipping for orders over $200. I have not found a richer, more pigmented acrylic iridescent gold paint than their own brand.
Utrecht paints, mediums and supplies, acrylic gesso. I use UTRECHT artist’s grade or professional gesso when I need a very thick gesso for creating raised patterns. I use their acrylic paint for coloring paste when making paste paper. The paint is economical and heavily pigmented. It’s not creamy smooth like Golden paint but it is fine for making paste paper and the paint cost much much less than Golden brand. Utrecht drawing paper 70 lb. 12x18, pack of 100
